Alan VK6AMH sends in this information about FreeDV:
FreeDV was featured in an article on page 11 of the September issue of the WIA Magazine.
FreeDV is an open source software program developed by David Rowe, VK5DGR and others for HF digital voice communications.
The project has been expanded to include VHF / UHF digital communications currently dominated by commercial interests who sometimes restrict third party development through patents.
The main benefit of this mode is the reduction in background noise which is a growing problem for HF communications 20m and below in urban environments. The URL to David's web site is http://www.rowetel.com/?page_id=434
A FreeDV adaptor is also available (at a cost) which connects into the mic socket of a radio without the need for a computer.
Alan Harvey VK6AMH and David Goldfinch VK6AI have been experimenting with this mode and would like to get together with other local users possibly in a net centred on 7.177Mhz to share experiences and carry out further tests.
Please email Alan VK6AMH at alanmharvey@gmail.com if you would like to help set up / join this net.
Please note that Alan Harvey and David Goldfinch are not connected with the FreeDV development project other than as users.
